Here’s What to Look For in a Menopause Specialist
4 min read
These days, when it comes to our health care, women are putting👏in👏the👏research, which we absolutely LOVE to see. It’s so important to be scrupulous when vetting for a healthcare professional, especially when it comes to midlife and the menopausal transition.
The reality is, far too many women who seek support for menopause symptoms – whether from their primary care healthcare provider or OB/GYN – are met with ignorance, or worse: dismissal. This, despite the fact that symptoms of menopause like hot flashes/night sweats, vaginal dryness, and osteoporosis can have an outsized impact on quality of life and general well-being. Sexism of course plays a part, but so too does the historical lack of adequate training for clinicians in medical and nursing schools, as well as misinformation on the safety of treatment options.
All this to say, if you’re looking for a menopause expert, it makes complete sense to ask questions. We’re answering a few frequently asked questions we hear from community members seeking perimenopause and menopause care.
Who qualifies as a menopause expert?
As the conversation around menopause progresses, so too does the number of players in the game – we’re talking celebrity activists, menopause influencers, no BS-clinicians – and all are welcome to the discussion. But when it comes to clinical care, we want to make sure we’re heeding advice and treatment plans from actual experts. Elektra’s Chief Medical Officer, Nora Lansen, MD, MSCP is breaking down the important question: who qualifies as a menopause expert?
Can a nurse practitioner provide the same menopause care as a doctor?
MDs, OBs, NPs – there’s a ton of acronyms in the medical and women’s health space, which can be super confusing for people seeking a menopause specialist! But is one type of clinician more qualified than another? We’re answering this common question below.
What is a certified nurse midwife and how can they care of women in menopause?
“Midwife? Don’t they catch babies?” This is a question Elektra Clinician Kara Govoni, CNM, MSCP hears a lot. But it turns out, midwives do a lot to support women beyond the delivery room. Kara’s here to explain how a midwife can be a great addition to your menopause care team.
Elektra clinicians join us from a range of backgrounds in primary care, gynecology and obstetrics, and other facets of women’s health, and are further trained in menopause medicine, with certification by the Menopause Society.
